STOCKHOLM – TOKYO and in between Bengt Wanselius is one of our best-known performing arts photographers, retained by leading newspapers and publishing houses in Sweden and abroad. 1985-1997 he was resident photographer at the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) in Stockholm, where he collaborated with Arthur Miller, Andrzej Wajda, Robert Lepage and above all as Ingmar Bergman’s photographer of choice, resulting in the documentation of 20 productions at Dramaten, at the Royal Swedish Opera and on Swedish Television until his very last production Saraband, followed recently by a book on Ingmar Bergman which has been accoladed by reviewers and rewarded with Sweden’s prestigious Augustpris. Bengt Wanselius formal education was at Stockholms Professional School for Photographers 1959-1961. Until 1985 he worked as a freelance photographer. Some of these assignments took him to war-stricken areas in the Middle East. He started early on to photograph dance and theatre and has collaborated with directors such as Bille August, Bo Widerberg and Liv Ullmann and choreographers such as Mats Ek. This partnership has resulted in a host of photographs and a film, parts of which will be screened in conjunction with the exhibition. The film was shot on Fårö in July 2008. Dansmuseet has previously presented exhibitions by photographers Isabel Muñoz (2002), Gert Weigelt (2002 och 2008), Irving Penn (2003), Mats Bäcker (2004), Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin (2004), Eadweard Muybridge (2005), Ivar Sviestins (2006) och Charlie Ahearn (2007). |
